News from Baghdad

A small spot to describe to a certain extent what it is like for the soldiers here in Iraq. I must remain anonymous as there may be some who would view this as an "official" posting, however, it is not. Just some personal views on the politics and public views in this war that has been to oftentimes tainted by the sensationalism of the media.

13 October 2004 (Post 2)

I found this in my e-mail this morning after I finished my last blog and thought it may be interesting to you. Fact or fiction? You decide. Personally, I will err on the side of caution and take this from a source that I know is reliable. Thank you and take care.

Hi! Received this from a very good friend in PA. she wants everyone toknow what she saw.Good Tuesday morning! John Kerry brought his "front porch meeting" to our Canonsburg, PA neighborhood on Labor Day morning. Since you will never hear the truth from the TV or print media I thought that you should know from someone who was `almost' there. The residents who live on the street where the event took place were not allowed to attend.Kerry shipped in approximately 90 invitation only VIPs. In addition, there was a hard luck case who was about to lose her job at USAIR and another was an elderly woman who was having health care problems. Neither one was fromthis neighborhood. The street was closed to all traffic the night before and all residents on the street were REQUIRED to remove their Bush/Cheney signs. The sympathetic police officers on duty told us that Kerry used imminent domain to claim the street for his purposes. Residents who have homes within the perimeter (approximately 1 full block) were kept behind a line away from the partisan crowd. The rest of us were not allowed within the 1 block cordon. A neighbor from across the street came to the line where we were being kept and asked us to come onto his property. The police told us that we could stand on this mans FORMERLY private property! This was set up so that Kerry's views could be heard - but not the neighbors.

About 30 people (mostly neighbors) shouts echoed down the street "Let the neighbors in".
We could barely hear Kerry speaking with his microphone because press buses were used to block us off from view!

This mornings papers are reporting hecklers tried to interrupt Kerry as he spoke to the neighborhood gathering, but he turned our chants to his favor by calling us rude.Even though most of the media was there to record our stories of not being included in the neighborhood forum, not one of them printed or aired the truth. This is what America will look like if Kerry becomes president.Get registered and get all of your friends registered to vote if they have not already. Kerry thinks that he is better than the rest of us and he has the media on his side to make him out to be what he is not!

Finally, last night as I drove down the street where the rally was, I was shocked to see Bush/Cheney signs in almost every yard on the street! Please send this e-mail on to as many people as you can.

LET FREEDOM RING!

On a final note regarding this piece, where were the residents Constitutional rights ever regarded in this entire escapade? My personal apologies go out to the people of this community who were in no wise remotely respected by this "upstanding" American. If this is will be the face of our country for the next four years, I may move. Possibly to Iraq. No different here.

Hey Jay - I got the same email and was apprehensive about it. Not that I don't believe it couldn't have happened but because it was difficult to confirm so I didn't pass it onto anyone else. I'm very curious to know also if it is true.

Your post about the family with the little girl was truly touching. My best wishes to this family for their journey and relocation to America. We as Americans have so much to be grateful for not just with the freedom and wealth we enjoy but for our wonderful military members who voluntarily serve. You guys and gals rock. I'm been more uplifted by small little 2 sentence notes of thanks from troops I support. Whenever it seems like I am not making a difference I will get a note from a troop which validates my faith and support for them.

As much as I despise admitted war criminals and trial lawyers this is a bunch of crap. Urban legend like bringing back the draft. Snopes.com will debunk. File under fake but accurate.

Hi Jay - I am checking this out with an in I have to a top Kerry advisor, it may take a few days but this doesn't make alot of sense. Then again it is getting very messy here. Did you get this info about a Republican hired voter registration group that has been shredding the democrats that they registerTthere are some links I can send.

RNC funds voter supression efforts

This is big, from reader MK:

Found the following links which all seem to point to the same company that is suspected of tearing up Democratic voter registration forms in Las Vegas. It has set up registration drives in Pennsylvania, Minnesota, Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia, Florida and Nevada and is accused of the same things in most if not all of these states.  Sproul & Associates is a Republican consulting firm run by Nathan Sproul, former head of the Arizona Republican party and Arizona Christian Coalition.

Nevada:
Voters Outreach of America AKA America Votes tears up Democratic voter registration forms in Nevada.

Oregon:
Company claiming affiliation with non-partisan 'America Votes' to register voters in Oregon is actually GOP consulting firm Sproul & Associates, Inc.

West Virginia and Pennsylvania:
Sproul & Associates AKA America Votes workers in WV and PA refuse to register Kerry voters.

Oregon
Democrats in Oregon have complained that canvassers for Arizona based Sproul & Associates have been pressuring residents to register as Republicans so that they can get paid.

Arizona
Arizona Nader campaign was assisted in its petition drive by an unlikely figure: the ultra-conservative former executive director of the Arizona Republican Party, Nathan Sproul.

About Sproul:
Good background story on Sproul and his political track record, cached on Google.

The link:
Here is the direct link between Sproul and Voters Outreach of America.

According to several sources, two of the contractors Sproul hired to oversee petition gathering for No Taxpayer Money For Politicians -- Aaron "A.J." James, who directs Voters' Outreach of America, and Diane Burns -- were also paid by Sproul to get as many signatures as possible for Nader.
But the reader then asks the key question -- who is paying for these efforts?

The answer?
KLAS-TV, Las Vegas:
"The company has been largely, if not entirely funded, by the Republican National Committee."

CareerBuild.com listing:
Help wanted ad for Voters Outreach of America says "Paid for by the Republican National Committee".
The Republican Party is funding these efforts.

Also you could check out my blog for a list of voter disenfranchisemnt I read in the local papers while in Orlando, FL. and some rebellious Repubs who refuse to go along!

Funny how our glasses affect how we see stuff. I am an independent but liberal oriented (I happily vote for my Republican senator and the democratic one). I keep seeing civil liberties taken away from us by the Bush administration and have wondered about maybe needing to move out of country under a Bush administration! Who knows anymore what is true or not! I certainly don't. I just keep reading and posting.

Be safe,
Jillaurie (a relatively new reader of Miblogs)

Hi - I am new to blogging so I don't know exactly what trollage means but I assume it is not comlimentary. So to set the record straight - I have formed some wonderful friendships with soldiers in Iraq through their blogs.

We are all aware that we have different political points of view that is why we communicate. I recently "adopted" a soldier. I honor and respect our servicemen and women and pray for their safety each day.

The Miblogs I write on invite other points of view and have been clear that I am very welcome as I believe I am here also.
I would certainly respect if any soldier asked me not to post on his or her blog but the responses have been the opposite.

It is our open hearts reaching out to each other that make all the difference.

I just wanted to comment on the blog regarding Kerry. He is a man of honor just as all those who serve or have served. I cannot understand why there is so much hatred from certain people with regards to him. He did serve and did not train as an airpilot at the expense of 1 million dollars and then rather than serve chose to help out with a campaign in Alabama and unlike Cheney who had 5 deferrments and said he had more important things to do rather than serve. How can these men be considered so honorable when in fact they have never faced war and death in the face? As to the statement in that blog about how Kerry was approached, the fact is you could not get in to see Bush unless you had been screened. Only Bush supporters were allowed. There were hecklers at Kerry events and his statement was, "They have a right to speak, this is America." God bless you and yours and be safe.
